James Gjerde, WWII Veteran, Richwood, MN

Ten Patriot Guard members from Detroit Lakes, Alexandria, Bemidji, Brainerd, and Thief River Falls sectors gathered to honor WWII Veteran James Gjerde. Flag line was esablished at 12:30 and we stood down after the service started at 1:30 p.m. Members of the church brought us out a huge plate of sandwiches and bars/cake to a picnic table outside the church, along with coffee for us during the service - very much appreciated (tip: don't get between Al and the lemon bars). The church was located just outside of Richwood, on a hill overlooking a little lake - a very beautiful spot under clear skies and a light wind. Flag line was re-established for transfer to the hearse. Jim Cyr, ARC for Thief River Falls led a 3 person escort, with the other 2 bikes flying Old Glory infront of the hearse for the 5 mile escort to the cemetary near Callaway. Remaining members went ahead to establish flag line. Military honors were provided and we stood down after family and friends departed.

Several family members came outside the church to take pictures of the flag line and expressed their thanks for our attendance - to which we all replied that it was our honor. We are grateful for Mr. Gjerde's service to our country.

Thank you to all who were able to come today to honor Mr. Gjerde, and thank you to those that were there with us in spirit.
